The Little Orphan
by Edgar Albert Guest
The crowded street his playground is, a patch of blue his sky;
A puddle in a vacant lot his sea where ships pass by:
Poor little orphan boy of five, the city smoke and grime
Taint every cooling breeze he gets throughout the summer time;
And he is just as your boy is, a child who loves to play,
Except that he is drawn and white and cannot get away.
And he would like the open fields, for often in his dreams
The angels kind bear him off to where are pleasant streams,
Where he may sail a splendid boat, sometimes he flies a kite,
Or romps beside a shepherd dog and shouts with all his might;
But when the dawn of morning comes he wakes to find once more
That what he thought were sun-kissed hills are rags upon the floor.
Then through the hot and sultry day he plays at “make-pretend,”
The alley is a sandy beach where all the rich folks send
Their little boys and girls to play, a barrel is his boat,
But, oh, the air is tifling and the dust fills up his throat;
And though he tries so very hard to play, somehow it seems
He never gets such wondrous joys as angels bring in dreams.
Poor little orphan boy of five, except that he is pale,
With sunken cheeks and hollow eyes and very wan and frail,
Just like that little boy of yours, with same desire to play,
Fond of the open fields and skies, he’s built the self-same way;
But kept by fate and circumstance away from shady streams,
His only joy comes when he sleeps and angels bring him dreams.

T- The Little Orphan
- The title The Little Orphan gives me an idea that the poem is about an orphan life.
- Also, I think the mood won’t be happy, because it depicts the life of orphan.
P- The orphan child in this poem has a same desire like other normal children. However, because he is an orphan, he had to live an odd life. He play in a street, puddle in a vacant lot, and rides on a barrel instead of boat. Also, his only joy is when he sleeps and dreams. So, basically, its depicting this orphan is having a hard time in playing (or life).

Imagery-
Poor little orphan boy of five, except that he is pale,
With sunken cheeks and hollow eyes and very wan and frail (Last Stanza)
(It depicts his appearance.)
This imagery tell us the circumstance of this boy and make us predict he suffered a lot.
The angels kind bear him off to where are pleasant streams,
Where he may sail a splendid boat, sometimes he flies a kite,
Or romps beside a shepherd dog and shouts with all his might; (2nd Stanza)
This imagery gives us an idea that this boy wants to have a life similar to his dream.
Symbol- Angel-parents, hope
Kite- freedom, joy
Dream- life he wants
A- The mood of this poem is peaceful but it is also sad. When the author explains about this orphan, it seems there is nothing serious, but when author depicts about orphan playing with some thing, the orphan seems miserable. Also the last line of this poem is describes that it is hard to find a joy in his life.
S- In the second stanza, it talks about his dreams, but in the last line of this stanza, it comes back to the reality. Also, the first and third stanzas are about his hobbies, and life style, but in second and fourth stanza, the topic was about the orphan’s dream, and reality.
T- The Little Orphan.
- My guess was close. But, specifically it was about miserable life of this little orphan. Anyways, I had a feeling that this orphan is kind of unfortunate, because the title The Little Orphan didn’t sound happy.
T- The poem depicts the miserable life of little orphan. The lines about comparison between rich children and little orphan seems like the author is criticizing the rich people. Edgar Albert Guest, the author of this poem lived during the Great Depression in U.S. So, I think he is using this character, the little orphan, as a symbolism of laborers during the Great Depression in order to describe the life and hardships at that time.
Or maybe the purpose of this poem is that we should be the orphan’s angel in order to give them hope and joy.

If I Were King
If I Were King
Anonymous author
If I were king, my dear, if I were king,
what tributary nations would I bring, to
bow before your scepter and to
swear, allegiance to
your eyes,
your lips,
your hair,
and you would have the sun and moon to wear
if I were king
T-If I Were King
I think If I Were King is used as a title, because the author wants to do or show something which is impossible unless he become a king. So the author is describing the thing he will do if he becomes a king.
P- If this person was a king
he would have tribute nations
and bow before her throne,
and swear and be loyal to the person he loves.
Also, he would have present sun or moon for her to wear
If he was king
C- Hyperbole- what tributary nations would I bring
you would have the sun and moon to wear
A- Author is expressing his strong love toward his girlfriend or wife. Author seems very desperate to get her. Also it seems like author could do anything to her.
S- I think there are no shifts.
T- The title If I Were King is appropriate for this poem, because this title is the verse of the first and last part of this poem. Also the title describes that author loves this person very highly, because it kind of describing that he is able to love her if he were king.
T- The theme of this poem is when one person fall in love; this person can do anything for his/her girl/boy friend. This poem is saying that we can sacrifice ourselves for people who we love.
